Frank,

My apologies for the stupidity of my previous post. Not likely that you
are using an Apple Pro Keyboard on a c600. (should have read further
back in the thread)

Try moving the sound control panel and sound preferences to the trash.
I don't remember what other "sound related" control panels you get with
OS 8.6, maybe speech and another one or two. I would, just for good
measure, move them to the trash as well, along with their preference
file.

Then restart, and reinstall those control panels, by copying them from
another system or even extract them from the OS 8.6 CD using Tome
Viewer. The system will rebuild preference files for these control
panels.

That may get you back to normal.

As a long shot... If you son regularly uses earphones, try plugging
them back in, and see if you get any sound. There could be something
sticking in the audio jack that is automatically muting the sound. You
have at least two places to check, maybe three. There is an audio jack
on the back of the c600, as well as the front, near the bottom of the
case. Likewise, many monitors have earphone jacks.

You may have mentioned it, but, do you get any start up chimes?

Nancy
