Well yes there are some holes in the plot or perhaps loop holes would be a better way of putting it;-). I'm not the best person to be explaining this to you who know far more then I do on most computer subjects. But is seems you have fallen behind on G3/4 upgrade info ;-)In the early days of upgrading our machines it was thought that as you said . G3 8x the bus speed which was thought to be 50mhz so 400 mhz maximum. It turns out that the CPU sets the bus speed up to the limits of the motherboard. The motherboard's bus speed also isn't as limited as some had thought. 50mhz is the average speed not the limit. Many people including me have found that with the right cpu these machines will sometimes run at 60 mhz bus and stabile. My J700 machine tops out at apox 61 or 62 mhz bus! I've talked with others and the max bus speed varies from motherboard different examples seem to run at different max speeds. The Power Tower Pro seems to be the fastest of this motherboard type topping out at 64-65 mhz! Also G3 upgrades which use the IBM copper cpu can be and are run at 10x the bus speed! The G4 IBM copper cpu's run at 9x the bus speed. I have been running my XLR8 G3 500mhz 10x 50mhz bus over clocked to 550 mhs with a bus of 55mhz for apox a year or so no problems at all. I didn't just dream this up the upgrade companies give you the means to do it with. At the time I bought the upgrade XLR8 said that in the future they were hoping to sell 12x or even faster cpu's . My guess is that is what is happening with the 800mhz upgrade someone has figured a way to up the cpu multiplier and perhaps other tricks.
