Bill, We recently purchased a big Belkin BackUps unit. It came with a USB cable and a CD with (I believe it was called Bulldog) software for automatically shutting down in a power failure, and restarting the system. I have not tried the software, as I do not leave our computers running 24/7. From what I remember, the software only worked with Belkin brand back up units. I don't remember anything about OSX. It might be worth investigating. If you have a Belkin brand back up unit, that has a USB connection on it, I will be happy to send you the CD for experimentation.
