Hi all I got my Compaq ST15150 drive working fine with the Mac, and now I find the SCSI bus on this Mac is SLOW! I'm getting at most almost four mbytes/sec, in fact the 1 gig factory drive tests faster than the Compaq drive by about 15 percent. I need my SCSI bus to be able to do over 5MB/sec so I can capture and edit DV with it. So, I guess I need an Ultrawide SCSI card. I already have lots of 68pin cables, terminators, adapters etc. so I won't even have to spend any money there :-)
Oh, thanks again to the fellow Supermac list subscriber who sent me the Compaq hacked Drive Setup! I am wondering, can I buy a new PC Adaptec 2940UW controller and will it work? Do I have to flash its BIOS first, or do I have to get the Mac specific version for the BIOS chip to be big enough to hold the bootstrap code for use in a Mac? These cards are cheap and plentiful in this area and I need a SCSI card anyway, so I'm wondering if I have to buy a Mac specific version or can I just haxor the cheaper PC version and have it work. I will leave the stock drive and CDROM on the factory SCSI since they don't have to do video or anything. I've also set up a 50 pin HDC connector which plugs into the mobo's external (slow) SCSI port, and provides the HDC port to the outside-bypassing the cheap-o 25 pin Mac SCSI connector which breaks the SCSI spec. Not much speed difference, but its a more robust connection IMHO plus I already had the stuff to do it, so it didn't cost money. Thanks again! This list rivals the Amiga ones I used to be on in terms of fast, quality help, which is A Good Thing (tm). Bolton -- SuperMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
