No guarantees, but I've done so twice.  Both cards had an "AHA-2940UW"
sticker on the controller chip, both were unrecognizable when first
installed, and both took the Adaptec firmware update (4.1?) without
argument.  I've been using them for years ever since.

Regrettably, I haven't been able to do the same with any AHA-2940U2W cards.
(I can live with this because UW is plenty fast for the basic digital video
I've done lately.)
