Or until the "software" part of the device cannot be supported anymore.
Whichever comes first.
Most folks would run into driver incompatibilities before the hardware
itself
conks out.
I sure hope my MachFire firewire card is useable for at least another 3-4
years.
Not sure how it will behave in an OS-X environment.

Alan

And I respond:

Well, that is a possibility. (However, I'm not sure that the OEM SW for the
G3 cards is relevant for Jaguar or X. It was all written before X came on
the scene.) But as our list mom wrote, "This device will likely do what it
did when you bought it until it breaks." Actually, that's a paraphrase,
sorry for butchering your saying Dan. The G3 cards are all pretty much in
the same boat as far as that goes (Mac OS X compatibility.) I don't have X
installed on that S900, but I have a friend that does have X happily running
on his S900 with the XLR8 carrier card and a 360 mHz OWC G3.

As far as Mac OS X compatibility is concerned, if it weren't for Ryan, Will,
and others, that would not be a concern of this group. I am just now
beginning to test Jaguar on an S900 with a Sonnet G4 450. So far I have
managed to trash the (successful) install twice trying to get various SCSI
removable drives working, and expect to trash it a few more times. I have an
internal MO (Fujitsu), a SyQuest SyJet (another company that is out of
business), and an external 1GB JAZ drive that I intend to use with Jaguar.
So far, the MO is working. (Oh, and of course Umax is out of the Clone
Business, as are Motorola and what's their name.) I am also attempting to
get various USB printers working, also pre X.

Lets face it, the bulk of this group is addicted to pain and suffering. And
determined to squeeze the last drop of performance and utility out of what
was for many of us a significant chunk of change, to procure these beasties.
(Not every one on the list bought their Umax on eBay for $20. I both my
first one at full price and even my second one was bought when Umax still
had their clone license.
