I've never had much luck getting my S900/XLR8 G3 to boot off CDs.
When it recently refused to boot from the HD and took several hours
fiddling with the SCSI chain before it would run again (and I still
haven't got a clue what I did that worked) I got thinking I really
ought to have a boot/repair CD that would get it going, but the old
Supermac CD won't work anymore with the G3 inside, and I don't seem
to have any system CDs that will probably because they are all 3rd
hand or borrowed and meant for other Macs. I tried paring down the
system I am using, but I can't seem to get it small enough to get on
a CD and still work -when I start paring it down I seem to throw out
essentials, without any way to know what they are. Any suggestions?

(Makes me long for the good old days when the system installers would
let you make a minimum system for Macs other than the one being used.
Boy, that was handy).
