The booting from a CD problem is probably the fault of the CD-ROM drive, and not your processor upgrade. Many folks on this list have had good luck with Intech's CD Speed Tools or the hacked Apple CD driver. > snip... > I got to thinking I really ought to have a boot/repair CD that would > get it going > snip... > and I don't seem to have any system CDs that will (boot) probably > because they are all 3rd hand or borrowed and meant for other Macs. If you don't own a copy of DiskWarrior, or TechTools or Norton Utilities, purchasing at least one of these repair programs would be a wise investment. > I tried paring down the system I am using, but I can't seem to get it > small enough to get on a CD and still work. I pretty much used the same method Pete in the UK uses, by having my repair utilities on a separate partition. But, I have also made bootable CDs in the past, for my laptop, which does not have a partitioned hard drive. I usually start with Toast, and creating a 650MB partition. Then I add the System Folder that is on the Norton Utilities CD to the partition. The Norton System Folder is small and already has everything needed for running Disk Doctor, Speed Disk and AntiVirus. To that, I add the Programs, Extensions, Control Panels and Preference Files for anything else I need. (Disk First Aid, Mount Everything, SCSI Probe, DiskWarrior, TechTools, etc. - your choices are endless, but space is not) You also need to add the Programs, Extensions, Control Panels and Preference Files for your Zip Drive, CD drive, and any other useful hardware. Depending on how you are burning your CD, you will need to make sure the System Folder is blessed. In Toast, there is a "check box" for selecting bootable.
