I figured I'd report an interesting solution to a problem I have been having with my VST Ultratek ATA/66 card on the G3 s900. Some may remember that over the last few months I have had to do a re-start right after the initial startup in order for my machine to boot off one of the ide drives.
This has baffled me and others and solutions were not coming to light. But over the last few days, someone 'very helpful' from OWC suggested that I make sure my Memory Testing was not turned off because this might be causing the problem. So I checked it and sure enough it was on. But then I tested this by 'Disabling' the Memory Testing. Shut down again, waited. Started up and sure enough the computer booted right up the first time. To be sure, I enabled Memory Testing again in the Control Panel. Shut down, waited. Started up and the problem re-occurs. Then I Disabled Memory Testing once more, Shut down, waited, and start up. Problem goes away. So it appears that for whatever reason, having Memory Testing Enabled/ON is what is causing the problem with my ide drives booting up from a cold start. So the question now is, why do I have this problem with Memory Testing On? I also flashed the card firmware just to make sure it hadn't gotten corrupted. This changed nothing. I am using OS 9.1 and not X and so haven't upgraded to the X VST utility. Anyway, I figure that sharing this may help someone in the future being it was actually a solution opposite of what was expected that ended up working. Go figure! My off-the-cuff theory is that because I have 768 ram, it takes longer then it should to test the ram and by this time, the ide card & drives have missed the boot up process. So then the drives just hang forever unable to boot, until I restart. If anybody has any other ideas why this worked, I'd like to hear em. Thanks All!
