The prom (Open Firmware) runs a memory test from cold-boot to check the mem - 45 secs or so of black screen w/784 meg and two 604e/200. If you cmd-ctl-power or wait or turn off startup tests - as you've found - it will boot normally. I know from experience that a bad stick of ram will cause it to hang indefinately. Do you have something scsi to boot from - or a boot floppy or CD that would eliminate the ata card from the equation and let you determine if the firmware is finding fault with the memory?
