Have you tested your memory? The prom (Open Firmware) runs a memory test 
from cold-boot to check the mem - 45 secs or so of black screen w/784 
meg and two 604e/200. If you cmd-ctl-power or wait or turn off startup 
tests - as you've found - it will boot normally. I know from experience 
that a bad stick of ram will cause it to hang indefinately. Do you have 
something scsi to boot from - or a boot floppy or CD that would 
eliminate the ata card from the equation and let you determine if the 
firmware is finding fault with the memory?
