Beating this horse a little further....

My opinion and practice vary according to the particular 
circumstances of the email that I'm replying to.  If for instance it 
is a post that only requires a short respose, I'll often put that at 
the top. Granted, that usually happens more often in personal email, 
usually when a reply back is not expected, but sometimes it's 
appropriate for lists as well.

If, on the other hand, you need to respond to several points in the 
original post separately, it makes sense to do it top down: 
quote/response quote/response quote/response, with the unnecessary 
stuff stripped out, and is actually harder to make sense of with a 
top posting style.

And, if you jump into a thread in anything but the first couple of 
posts, it's easier to pick up what's going on with bottom posting.  I 
don't always read every post that comes in...

If someone has already replied with top posting, fine, I'll follow 
suit - doing otherwise gets really painfully confusing.  But 
otherwise, it reads more logically in most cases with bottom posting.

I think the points of this discussion have been made: 1) quote in a 
logical way considering the context 2) trim your quotes.

Can we stop talking about this now?
