It is conceivable that a mostly dead PRAM battery could lead to 
corrupt NVRAM contents, while a missing battery would just leave 
empty NVRAM.  Perhaps she should try the old-unplug the machine, pull 
the battery trick and let it sit .5 hour.    Then do not reinstall 
the suspect battery and see if it is any better.
