I own an Epson Perfection1640SU and it does a great job scanning negs and transparencies. I paid $400 (US) a couple of years ago and the quality is exceptional. Now the 2400 model costs around $225, and the 2450 (with Firewire) around $400 (US). I've seen some scans from the 2400. They are fabulous for a low-cost scanner. For the extra $100, you get a distinct speed boost from the Firewire. As a matter of fact, I'd be willing to sell my 1640 if I could get enough to help offset the cost of the 2450. The software that comes with the 2400 is also superior to that which came with my 1640. > > - Will the Epson work with the USB card sitting in the lowest slot of my > S900 (works fine with a Wacom tablet and a Epson printer)? I only run my scanner off the SCSI port on my S900. When I had my USB card in one of the lower 4 slots (driving an Epson Stylus Photo Printer and Logitech Mouse) I had definite problems. I don't know if it was the card itself or the slot it was in, but any time I printed to my Epson, the mouse would stop working. I replaced it with a Sonnet Tango (combo FireWire/USB) which resides in the top slot of my S900 and has been working flawlessley. Others on this list have reported issues with various multi-function cards such as this. If you have problems, try moving the card into one of the upper two slots (the usual blind recommendation).
