The default output device for Open Firmware 1.05 is the serial port. So when you boot into OF your J700 is trying to display it's screen by sending the data out the modem port. You can either connect another Mac to your modem port using a null-modem cable and running a terminal window such as Z-term or there is a utility somewhere which will let you reset the NVRAM parameter which controls the OF output device. Unfortunately, I don't remember what that utility is called. I suspect Will S. may chime in with the name of it though, but I'm guessing. I think there may be instructions about this somewhere on the BSD pages as well, so you may wish to do a Google search on BSD Unix and Macintosh and see what you turn up.
