Boot variables is the app you need. It will let you set the input and output devices that OF uses to communicate with you. On your J700 you should set your input-device to kbd and your output device to your video cards OF name. The 4MB twin turbo in my machine is seen as /bandit/imstt128m the 8MB card is seen as /bandit/imstt128mb8 and if they are in the lower slots you must add /pci-bridge/ between bandit and the video card identifier(I don't know if this applies to the J700 - how many PCI slots?). If your matrox card supports OF, you should be able to use it.
Regardless, the netbsd web site has a much more thorough explanation of OF on their web site - http:/www.netbsd.org. You can also use the apple utility mentioned there - System Disk - to change the Open Firmware variables. Check out the above website under the macppc port - lots of good info. This old s900 boots linux, NetBSD, and MacOS 9.2.2 from OF and bootstraps off of MacOS 7.5.5 to run BeOS 4.5 :) ps - I want a pegasos machine when the dual g4 option is available (either that or an old SGI) Tom -- SuperMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
