Ok a followup.
Linux PPC 2000 CD has a 1.3 mb PDF  USER Guide that is nicely written 
and even has a chapter on how to use open firmware on the different 
machines. It even lists the Umax S900 and J700 machines and most others.
 From a quick read it does look like the Twin Turbo Video card is needed 
as that is what they list as working.i was using the twin turbo card at 
the time I did the install so no wonder it worked. Just dumb luck ;-) 
Also software called "Boot Variables" is used or "Multibooter" 
(available from Apple it says) to get into Open Firmware. I can send a 
copy of the PDF file and "Boot Variables' if you want. Let me know and
