I have an S900 with a Newertech G3 Processor & 532 MB RAM. 3 Hardrives - a 2 GIG, and two 9 Gigs- each partitioned into 4.5 Gig. I've been running like this for two years of with no real problems.
However, I've just started having problems when trying to launch QuarkXpress 4.11. Frequently, I get an error message "out of memory". That is baloney, as they say, because I have allocated more than 27000 KB to that program. The odd thing is the program will run just fine for a month of so and then start these weird memory things again (it has done this before and stopped with no explanation), or it will just freeze up upon launch. I usually run Norton Disk Doctor from System works 1.0 and that seems to cure little problems that are found. I usually run it three times in a row even when it says things are OK. It never finds anything major wrong, and it doesn't cure the problem with Quark. I don't know why the machine did this same thing about two months ago, and then just starting working fine again - usually the next day after I've given up and gone home. I'm stuck on this one. Today for the first time I started getting error messages saying "this file cannot be opened by the version of Quark you are using". The dumb thing is I was the creator of the file - using the same Quark 4.11 version - that I still use. I'm beginning to wonder of I have a "memory leak" as was talked about a while back with OS 8.6. The weirdest thing is all other programs run fine, except VPC occasionally just quits - with now explanation. But that is tolerable, believe it or not. It just re-launches without a problem, WIN98 does its Scan Disk thing and it is just fine again. My final question is - should I upgrade to OS 9.1? My hesitation to do so is caused by the fact that I am soooooo networked into our corporate Mainframe, file servers, and Lotus NOTES servers etc. that I would be in a total freefall if I could not connect to all that "windows" stuff. I'm the only MAC guy in a Huge PC corporate world of 45,000 + people. (I know - its sounds like a miracle that I even have a MAC - right?). Well as long as I'm up and running nobody cares, including IT. I also use DAVE and VPC 4. I am due to get a new G4 after January 1st, but the date is not firm. I need to "operate" now. Any thoughts - about the upgrading or otherwise? Thanks for your input. PLEASE NOTE: The preceding information may be confidential or privileged.
