Hi mwsmith, I would feel better to fix 9.0.4 first then you can think about 9.1. You can try rebuilding the desktop by holding down the option-Apple keys at startup. This often solves problems like the Quark thing. Try zapping the pram with the option-Apple-p-r keys depressed at restart to the 3rd bong. Your system file could be damaged. Go to the system folder and from the system prefs file, trash the finder prefs, Mac OS prefs and system prefs. Then restart. Which version of Nortons is that? I use Nortons 6 & 7. If you have an early edition, it may not be seeing the problem. There is a free download of TechTool Pro from www.micromat.com. This might see the problem. I found 9.1 to be more stable than 9.0.4. It's easy for me to suggest upgrading but only you know your tolerance for the techno-political situation at work.
