Region 2 is Europe I believe which means your DVD can play Disks sold 
in Europe! USA is Region 1 and so it needs to be set to region 1 to 
play DVD's sold/ rented here. However I don't think this should make a 
difference in recording or formating blank disks... Perhaps the 
software you are using also has a region code in it and if sold in the 
USA would also be region 1 so wouldn't work with region 2 drive.
There is software which lets you reset the region code yourself. I will 
look around and send you the www page.  You sure are good at coming up 
with odd problems to solve ;-) Will S
