Ok, I booted into OS 9.1 an opened ASP. I have 3 hard drives hooked to my Sonnet/ACARD ATA pci controller. 2 are Quantum and 1 is a Seagate. None of them show driver version in ASP they all 3 say n/a for not available. One is using Intech's Hard drive speedtools the other 2 Apple's Drive setup. Now if I do a get info the driver is shown correctly. ASP is not the best tool. It often shows different info in different Mac OS's and in Jaguar it crashes and shows no info since 10.2.2 upgrade and wasn't fixed in 10.2.3 despite many people complaining about this issue. > When I check the driver version on a Quantum 15 on the other ide bus, > it > shows it just fine. Locked CDRW and DVDRW drives must be a known issue because the wonderful UNIX CDRW and DVD burning software "CDRDAO" includes a button to unlock the drive. This software is available as part of the full package for Windozes called "VCDEasy" and "Missing CD burning tools" for Mac OSX. Also available for LINUX. In fact Mac OS 8/9 are pretty much the only OS's for which it isn't available which is really too bad as I love it and started using in Win 98 but since it is available for OSX use it there. In fact Video in OSX has enough apps I no longer need to use Windozes anymore at all! Even though a couple of Windozes apps are still faster/better then the OSX versions. I mention CDRDAO because if you had or knew someone with a PC or OSX you could maybe hook your DVD drive up and unlock it using one of these apps. I don't know of any MAC OS 9 app that has this feature . There are several Mac CD burning apps I haven't used much nor in a long time that could I suppose have this feature(toast doesn't have it) > On this 60 gb drive, I should note that it also freezes my machine up > when I > run a surface or media scan. What app are you using to run a surface/media scan Techtool if I remember correctly? I have no idea why this would happen. I am no fan of Techtool and wonder if the version you have needs to be updated for the OS you are using it on? Norton isn't the app it once was but Speedtool and Disk DR can be ran with no problem if you use Disk Warrior first. Will S > By chance does anybody know if these problems are indicative of > Seagates or > a signal to a failing drive?
