Default install always has worked for my 610S. One thing if you get it working, ditch the Push Button program that gets installed. It slows your system waayyyy down. You do lose the ability to use the 'scan' button on the front, but most people don't use it anyway.
Check your SCSI termination and ID. That can cause odd behavior, I've had HDs work fine, then stop, just because I had an ID screwed up.
