Mitch on the german forum states clearly they tried flashing > the PC card using that updater in the Mac and the 208 rom updater > refuses to update the PC card. So somehow they managed to code a Mac > Flasher which works in MS Dos and figured out a way to make it work. The russian ROM flasher, which only works in DOS, loads a modified Mac ROM to the card. This Mac ROM is not to make the card work, it's just to make the ATI 208 ROM updater work. (For a short time I thought this step might not be necessary, but I was wrong) Later, after installing the card into the Mac, we will use the original ATI 208 ROM updater, like we would do with the normal 7000 Mac Edition card to update the ROM. The ATI updater will see the "russian ROM" as a corrupted Mac ROM and completely replace it with a new, fresh, original ATI 7000 Mac Edition ROM. Now the card works in the Mac. > The Sapphire card is a two > monitor card like the Mac version but the ATI version only has the SVGA > port no second port. The Sapphire 32mb card also has the two ports as > does the ATI 32 mb card. I fear we have to use a card that has all the connectors the Mac Edition has. I'm really not sure, but I think that's why mitch chose the Sapphire. RAM size doesn't matter, but I think it might be problematic to use a ROM which supports features the card doesn't have, like DVI or TV out. > The other thing > about Sapphire cards you could end up with a Pal version if you buy > from the wrong place. The original ATI Mac Edition I have was NTSC, but I could easily set it to PAL in the ATI control panel. Not sure if the 3rd party cards have this feature though. > PS Chrisso I'm hoping you will explain about the 208 updater since > Mitch says it's only part of the solution and his package does use it. > Have you used the 208 update flasher on a PC card without first doing > the other steps outlined in Mitch's package? It's hard enough to translate mitch's postings from German to German, as I said before, his threads are always a little bit confusing. I did not try it, and I don't own one of these Sapphire cards, well, I just bought the 7000 Mac Edition three months ago for 149 Euro :-( He's the only one who did it for now, with no help from others in the forum, and I'm still waiting for someone else jumping into the thread who also tried it. All I can say is what I said in my last post, but if you have any specific questions, I can try to translate them and ask mitch. Mitch's card works in OS 9.2.2 with all the features the original 7000 ME has, DVD, OpenGL Games and Quicktime acceleration work fawlessly, and the ROM is the original, unmodified ATI ROM. So I'm optimistic that it will also run in X, for me, there's no reason why it shouldn't. > To be clear as far as I know only Mitch is running Mac OS 9.1 using > this flashed card and no one has yet ran OSX with it.
