Hello all,

I've been following the Radeon 7000 "flashing" threads closely, trying to
archive relevant information.

Unfortunately, the "source site" for this project is in German, and the
individual (Mitch?) who did the German-to-English translations did not put his
presentation together coherently enough for idiots like me to comprehend his
chain of thought <G>.

>From what I have been able to gather reading the information posted there and
here, there are possibly _two_ courses of action to flash the Radeon 7000 PC
to be usuable on the Mac:

FIRST WAY (requires a PC):
- Flash the card on a PC with the "PC flasher" that was put together in this "package":
<http://people.freenet.de/amichalak/7000PCI.sit>
- And then, use the ATI Mac ROM updater to "finish off" the card and make it
"Mac-ready".

SECOND WAY (No PC required):
- Obtain a certain version of ATI's _Mac_ ROM updater software that is missing
the "hooks" that prevent it from "seeing" non-Mac-specific ATI Radeon 7000
cards. Because this updater cannot "distinguish" Mac-specific Radeons from the
PC-version Radeons, this particular flasher (and this one ONLY) can be used on
a Mac to update the ROMs on the PC-specific card to make it "Mac-ready".

Recently, this message was posted in SuperMacs by [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
=======
you have to follow the whole story.
They issued the 208 rom updater V1.
it goes back to a kensington mouse extension, that caused some macs to
corrupt the ati display card, and crash half thru the update process.
so to un-screw the mac users ati had to issue an update to the "rom updater"
(V2) that was capable of un-screwing a corrupt rom, WALA!!, a pc rom is
screwed up (to a mac), so it flashes the rom with the mac code, because the
updater thinks the card is screwed.
( they should have checked for the pc sig!!, but thats their mistake)
prior to that the previous updater always checked for the mac sig!!, which
prevented the updater flashing the "wrong card"
=======

QUESTION:
How does one "identify" WHICH VERSION of the ATI ROM updater software that he
has on disk?

The posting above makes mention of "208 rom updater V1" and "208 rom updater
V2". Apparently the "key software" for performing this entire operation "on
the Mac side" is this mysterious "V2" updater, which ATI neglected to make
"Mac-specific". Surely, it has been withdrawn from ATI's download page, but I
sense that _someone_, somewhere, still has this updater software around.

I checked around, and found two versions of ATI's "R7000-ROM-208" software:
1. Revision of 12/9/02
2. Revision of 1/22/03
What I have are "VISE" archives containing the installers. I currently DO NOT
have a Radeon card at all, so I haven't tried to install the software itself.

The Installers contain the following versions of the ATI updaters
Both "revisions" contain the following ROM versions:
- 208 (current)
- 119

But this _still_ doesn't make mention of the "V2" updater.

Since I don't have ready access to (or working knowledge of) a PC, tracking
down a "Mac-only" solution would be a significant step. I may have "read the
previous message wrong", and a Mac-only solution may indeed be impossible. But
if there _is_ one out there, let's smoke it out!

I sense a major "coup" here. I would urge other list members posting on this
issue to carefully edit their postings so that -- when assembled -- the
various bits and pieces of information can be easily digested and assembled
into a working tome. <G>
