Actually, the account became fragmented because the various elements of it
emerged while the "experiment" was in progress and others on the board asked
for more detail.

The essence is simple:

A) A Russian enthusiast developed a utility to extract and replace different
versions of the firmware on the card under DOS.

B) Mitch applied this to install an older version of the Mac firmware so
that the card would be recognized on a Mac, albeit non-functional.

C) Mitch then took advantage of a firmware updater that included the ability
to completely replace "corrupted" firmware instead of merely patching it.
