It seems no matter what the address if there is a valid System Folder
present the computer should boot from the drive. However, typically the
factory internal drive was assigned "0" as the address.
What are you using for reformatting the drive ?
If you are able to at least perform this task on the drive, there shouldn't
be any problems with the ribbon connections.
Did you reinstall the System folder onto the drive after reformatting it ?

Seems I have more questions then answers - sorry.
