Chris,

Alan mentioned something that he may not have mentioned in a loud 
enough voice.  Do you have a valid System Folder on one of your drives? 
  The blinking question mark usually indicates the computer can not find 
a System Folder from which to boot.

Also, if you are trying to boot from a System CD that contains anything 
newer than OS 8.1 you might be encountering a glitch in the UMAX CD 
drive.  If possible, try booting from a System CD for OS 7.5 or 7. 6 or 
8.1.
