depending on the chipset, you should be able to find a driver for the card, but, I didn't see any mac compatible advertised cards at startech.com. This might not mean anything, depending on the chipset used (probably a realtek or dec). Startech is nice enough not to advertise what chips are on the card, so if you look in the manual (or more likely on the pci card itself), you may be able to determine what chip it has on it and download a driver(extension) for MacOS for it from the chip manufacturers website. MacOS has supported ethernet networking since at least 7.5. > - ADSL is ethernet To share this, you probably need to buy a router, unless the imac has two ethernet ports and you want to run a software router. The reason I asked originally, was because to just hook up the two macs and transfer files via appletalk+filesharing you need a crossover cable - an ordinary patch cord won't work. > - I thought I HAD to upgrade to 8.6 to use ethernet on the C500. no, not unless its a driver issue - see above > Interestingly, some of the advice coming back (thank you John, Nancy) > is saying don't bother with 8.6, go to OS9, and upgrade the RAM > > I think I will try to take it a step at a time: add some RAM, go to > 8.5 then 8.6, get a router, then maybe dabble with 9. You learn more that way, but it's certainly more expensive. You already are using OSX, right? The classic environment for X should be some flavor of OS9 already. I would probably save that money for 8.5, and purchase a $10 realtek card (if the startech is not one already), a $50 broadband router for the dsl, and have $30 left to play with. :) tom -- SuperMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
