I went to a local computer store that carries just about everything. I
was looking for a firewire card like you. I noticed the Mac versions
were apox 2 times and more the price of the PC cards. I bought a fairly
generic cheap 4 port (3port + 1 internal port) IEEE 1394 PCI Interface
card. The fine print on the back of the box says.Fully compliant
P1394a and OHCI (rev.1.0) Brand is "PPA Inc." It has worked fine for a
couple of months no problems. It is in the last PCi slot on a J700 (
like a S900 laying on it's side but with only 4 PCi slots. Has the same
PCi bridge chip issues) Used in both OSX and OS 9.2.2 FireWire
requires Mac OS 8.6 or newer I believe. So the answer is yes cheap
cards work fine. I don't know if there are Firewire cards with
different standards that won't work in a Mac. Best of luck Will S
