I kind of fell out of this thread, so sorry if I don't remember
somethings.....

The Sonnet Crescendo card will replace the L2 cache (IIRC you were looking
for a CacheDoubler80 vs. 1MB L2 cache?). The L2 cache slot is basically a
PDS (processor direct slot), Sonnet and a few others took advantage of
this to allow the "non-upgradeable" machines to accept a G3 chip. Despite
the name, the Sonnet L2 G3 is not an L2 cache card, but a full G3 upgrade.

A regular cache card (or the CacheDoubler80) don't change anything with
the processor, they just give the processor faster memory so it doesn't
have to wait as long. If the price is about the same, opt for the G3 card
over the straight L2 card.

If the price is drastically different, the ball is in your court, it is
your bank account after all ;) Just for future enlightenment, if you go
the G3 route, don't expect to be able to load OSX on it. So far no one has
been able to get OSX to work with L2 G3 upgrades.
