If after every command an app seems to need to access the hard drive to load
more code, then that would make sense. I'm not familiar with Quark, but the
other apps you mentioned tend to load most of their code into RAM at launch.

It might make more sense, memory permitting, to copy the *documents* you are
editing to a RAM disk. This can significantly cut rendering time, but comes
with its own hazards, namely the inevitable crash while a doc is in the RAM
disk but hasn't been saved to hard drive. Frequent "Save a copy as�" is one
strategy. Using a utility like "Rambunctious" which can automatically save
to hard disk in the background is another.
