If you have a factory Matshita drive, you need to use a third party CD driver
such as FWB's CD-ROM ToolKit with its extension.
It was bundled with the factory CD.
Apple's CD driver will not work and if it is also present (or active) in the
Extensions folder, this will become the default driver even if CDT is active. I
would just remove the Apple stuff out of the folder.
Actually, if you are running OS 9, you can use Apple's own CD-Rom driver from an earlier system (7.6.1) to drive the original Matshita drive. You can get "Apple CD-Rom 5.3.1" from

Your idea, Eric, of booting from a floppy might not be such a bad idea. If you have an old Norton or similar emergency disk, you might be able to get up that way, then move the 5.3.1 driver into the extensions folder of the System folder on your hard drive. Another caution: on the Umax machines, the "C" key doesn't always work. You might have to use the "Bypass Internal Drive" key combo of Command+Option+Shift+Delete while you start up to get it to boot from a CD.
