This is one of the things holding me back from OSX as well, because one of my printers is also an IWII with the AT option and a MicroAsante Print hooking it into the home ethernet network.
I had a non Appletalk Laserwriter that, as serial only, has bupkis for support in X. The problem is the serial port, not necessarily the print engine. The various sites I visited trying to figure out my Laserwriter offered little for non-Localtalk printers. That said, since you have the Localtalk option, using the CUPS package offers the best hope for these legacy devices. You're not skunked, yet.
