Here's an update on my frozen bearing problem, I received my match 60 gig
Maxtor drive today. First thing I did this eve after formatting the drive
and verifying everything AOK, was to try swapping the good logic board into
my failed drive hoping maybe it would have enough oomph to kickstart the
media. Unfortunately it made no difference in mounting so I think I am back
to square one with having to swap out the platters into another drive.

I also went ahead and briefly opened up the bad drive while powered on and
to my surprise the platters were spinning pretty fast. Hard to tell if it
was going 5400 rpm though. It could be turning at 1000 for all I can tell?
Does anybody know if it needs to spin at its rated speed in order to access
data? Every once in a while the armature would move quickly across the
platter.

So since swapping logic boards made no difference and the platters are at
least spinning at some speed, I am wondering if maybe something is wrong
with the armature circuitry instead. But before I can better look into that
possibility, I'm going to have to build this clean-box so the drive can
remain open for longer than 30 seconds.

Another possibility may be that the heads aren't parking. It kinda seemed
like the head wasn't at the edge of the platter, but I will just have to
open up the new one when I get my box set up in order to determine this.

Anyway, I really didn't get anywhere except to know that the problem isn't
the logic board.
