Hi,

Anyone out there know of a USB to Ethernet adapter? I have a 500c and only 2
PCI slots in it. One is being used by my Voodoo card and the other has the
Ethernet card in it. I'd like to be able to use some USB devices on the
computer but I don't want to sacrifice my network access. So I figured I'd
take the NIC out and add a working USB card, find an Ethernet adapter with a
USB connector and I'd be set. So far I have not come across such a beast. Are
there such devices out there? I'm running OS 9.1 if thats a consideration.

I have no idea if the following will work well in a Mac. And I don't know if it will specifically work in the C500, because I think there are issues with PCI cards that have PCI-PCI Bridges on board in the C series (different issues from the S/J series), but SIIG makes a USB/Firewire/Ethernet card which supports 10/100 ethernet. The Ethernet chipset is the RealTek 8139 which has MacOS drivers available. It might be worth looking at. I've been tempted to pick one up and give it a try, but I know that in the S900 it's only going to work in the top two slots and those are already spoken for so many times over...

You can take a look at the card on SIIG's website which is just where you'd expect it to be. The card doesn't mention Mac support, but as long as the USB and the Firewire chips meet the proper standards they should be supported and that just leaves the RealTek Ethernet chipset drivers which are available. Of course, if the drivers were really poorly written, they might not work on a chipset which is behind a P-P Bridge.
