OK I'm the worlds biggest procrastinator! I purchased 4 sticks of memory several years ago from Velocity-remember the name? They are 128mg 60ns EDO, which should work in my S900, as EDO is a subset of FPU? My computer had the original 2 8mb chips it came with, plus 2 64mb chips I ordered when I purchased it, which with onboard gave me 160mb. I can't even test the new chips! Installing one, and powering up- no monitor, no response to keybord commands like shutdown or restart either. You do hear the CD power up, but that's about all. I've waited up to 5 minutes before I shut the machine down. I've done the CUDA thing. It won't allow a PRAM zap on startup. Is it the fact its Velocity; EDO, or what? I still have the original processor in the S900. Would installing the XLR8 upgrade card and G4-450 prior to putting the new memory in change things? I'm grateful for any suggestions the list can provide. Thanks. Paul
Paul,
The MacOS ROM does a RAM check at cold startup - this will delay startup considerably. If you waited 5 mins. and it did not boot, it sounds like you may have bad RAM. If you ctrl-cmd-power and soft boot the computer from the grey screen, it should bypass the memory test and boot from the disk. You also have the option of disabling it by holding down the cmd-opt keys and double clicking on the memory control panel. Neither of which is probably wise if you have a bad stick... It might allow you to boot and use a ram checking utility to diagnose the faulty stick. I have 4 128MB FPM velocity sticks in this machine right now - when I purchased them, I returned two of the original 4 as faulty and then 1 of the returned 2 as well. They had a forgiving return policy, but apparently their quality control was not up to snuff before the product was shipped. I am using those 4 sticks as part of a total of 784MB in this machine to run my entire system (linux) from RAM, for a silent s900.
