Just an FYI, it takes 4 minutes to cold boot my S900 with a gigabyte of EDO. That's 4 minutes until video shows up.
Short RAM explanation: there was once just conventional RAM, where the computer sent the RAM an address and it would fetch the contents of the address. Then came Fast Page Mode (FPM) where the RAM would fetch that address and cache the contents of the next "page" over in memory in case the next address it was supposed to fetch is that one, resulting in greater speed for sequential fetches. Then came Extra/Extended Data Oout (EDO) which would fetch the address and cache the next address the computer wanted, so it was generally faster all around. Since EDO and FPM both have prefetch logic, EDO is capable of operating in the inferior FPM mode. Just make sure the voltage is correct (3.3V or 5V) and the refresh (2k or 4k) is compatible with your system. If you have no idea what the specs of the module you're holding are, do a Google search for the part number of one of the chips on the module or search for the Velocity or whoever really makes the chips' page on part number syntax. Part numbers in RAM almost always are made up of the chip's spec. My S900 needed to have its power supply upgraded after I added all that RAM. Adding RAM means your machine pulls more power, so you need a beefier power supply to handle the load. I don't know if that's what's causing your problem, since in addition to the RAM I was running a dual 180MHz PowerPC 604e, 2 CD-ROMs, a really nasty hard drive, and five case fans. I'm using a Jeff-style modded Antec TruePower 430W power supply and it's working great. -Drew B -- SuperMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
