I bought a PowerLogix G3 900 upgrade from OWC Feb 8th and have >>been struggling since then to install. Yesterday I downloaded the >>"G3G4CacheProfiler1.5" from PowerLogix >>to the hard drive I set up >>to the boot drive. I then out found I had been mislead by the CD that >>came with the Carrier Card from Daystar. The CD had a Cache Control >>installer that turns out wont work with my S900. Now it is mostly OK >>but not fully checked as yet.
It would appear that the "G3G4CacheProfiler1.5" may not be compatible >with the G900 CPU. Powerlogix's "Cache Director 1.3" is made for it and >works in both OS 9 and OSX. It lets you set CPU speed on the fly using
the software and is specially made for the G3 FX CPU .
**** That is right on Will.
G3/G4CacheProfiler 1.5 from PowerLogix has a creation date of Aug 16, 2001.
XLR8 MACH Speed control v. 2.6.2 on the CD from DayStar has a creation date of Sun, May 18, 2003, 3:13 AM.
CPU Director 1.3f1 from PowerLogix has a creation date of Wed Oct 29, 2003.
I trashed all the " G3/G4CacheProfiler 1.5 " and XLR8 MACH Speed control v. 2.6.2 files and downloaded CPU Director 1.3f1.
My card doesn't seem to like a 50 MHz bus so I set it at 48 MHz. No matter what speed you set the processor to boot with, when it boots, CPU Director is in control and all adjustments to processor speed can be made in the CPU Director.
I noticed that, no matter where the ZIF switches are set, the CPU Director boots the System at the minimum multiplier of 3.5X. You then adjust CPU Director incrementally to find your desired Boot speed.
When first booted you will be able to incrementally increase running speed to see when or if you system becomes unstable, or the heat sink smokes. When the system crashed I had to re-boot with the PPC233 and run Norton's Disk Doctor. Typically, and I have no clue why, among other coruptions involving the B-Tree, the system is un-blessed
I did run at 904 MHz but not stable with that configuration( it froze when I clicked the mouse). Once the desired boot speed is reached use the buttons to set it to boot at that speed. I you goof ( and I did) just trash the "CPU Director Prefs". If you set too fast you may have to re-boot from the old Processor( as I did) to access the Preference folder.
Incidentally, the *New* CPU Director 1.3f1 allows a multiplier setting of 20X. So it has indeed been upgraded to use all capabilities of the 750 FX chip :-).

My guess is many of your issues were perhaps from needing this >software for things to work correctly.
*** That is true and I thank you and others for the clear advice. ***
***I hope this helps best of luck Will S PS Powerlogix's support has been reported as lacking by many. It could be as simple as too few people getting too many questions.
Jason at PowerLogix has always been prompt, courteous and accurate in the past.
Also I am still booting from the 9Gig Scsi I had re-initialized with a fresh install of OS9.1 and extension set OS9.1BASE copied, with the CPU "Director INIT 1.0f1". "CPU Director INIT 1.0f1" installs automatically when you first open "CPU Director 1.3f1".
The ATA drive ( a boot drive, also with OS9.1, but not set up with the G3 yet) is also powered and co-exists fine with the booted G3.
There are some extension issues in, at least, OS9.1:
Disable "GXGraphics 1.1.6"( that may have been a problem associated with XLR8 MACH Speed control v. 2.6.2 only, I need to check that)
Install "CarbonLib 1.6"
There still are stability issues that I will try to remember as I progress and report on later. Given the intermittant character of my memory and clarity that is all problimatic ;-).
Thank you all,
Ernie
