Strangely enough, the freezes you may be partially from the Netscape 4.7x browser, since some of the more complex css and stylesheet code is interpreted very slowly compared to a more modern browser.

However, I have found that under 9.2x, the NSCP 7x series performed well.

FYI, Systems prior to 9.2 would often freeze up on me, even with a G3/400 and 1GB of RAM.

I second the previous info re:MacPOET, as well.

A great many bugs were fixed between 4.77 and 4.8, some of them were mac-specific.
But it's getting a bit long in the tooth now.

What's the last usable version of Mozilla for 9.x, anyway??

Looking for software for Mac OS 9?

Due to the lack of developer interest, build machines, compilers and testing resources, the last Mozilla.org Mac OS 9 build is Mozilla 1.2.1. Click here <ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/mozilla/releases/mozilla1.2.1/mozilla-macos9-1.2.1-full.bin> to download this version. Volunteers occasionally provide new updates that may be of interest to users, such as the Mozilla 1.3.1 build by Harunaga Hirotoshi <http://www.t3.rim.or.jp/%7Eharunaga/mozilla-macos9/>, and a variation on this build by WaMCom <http://wamcom.org/latest-131/> that includes some Mozilla 1.4 code and extensions.

This may not make a difference, but based on info that was floating around about various versions, I stuck with and updated the 'free' versions through 4.8 until switching to IE (while still in 9.1) and then onto Safari starting with Panther.
I did brifly try 6.0 when it first came out but was very very buggy.

I found 4.76, 4.78 and then 4.8 to be fairly stable while it lasted. (I think I have the version #s correct.)

Just my experience.
