Basically, ATA 100 and ATA 133 cards should go in one of the first two

Acard ATA100 and 133 cards work fine in the lower slots. There have not been issues with the Acards. It's the Sonnets that cause problems.

Single function video cards also tend to work fine in the lower slots. It's the dual output and capture cards that have problems in the lower slots.

As for the bridge chip... the thought was to enable cards ont he PCI
bus to communicate directly with each other, leaving the rest of the
system's resources free to do other things.

It may also have had something to do with the fact that Umax could buy the parts from Apple for a three PCI slot machine and then sell a six slot machine.

I'm not sure if the licensing addressed this. Depending on the terms of the contract between Apple and Umax this may not have been an advantage. But it may have been an advantage. It could have worked out such that Apple contracted to sell components for what it thought were three slot machines and Umax built four and six slot machines.

Also Umax could build a six slot machine using two fewer custom Apple ASICs by this method.
