I want to connect 2 macs, possibly all my macs (5), to the internet via my
ntl cable modem.

For the passed few years I've been connecting to the internet from my C500
via a D-link 4 port hub.

My ntl cable modem is plugged into the hub for connection, this way I can
stay on my small mac network (I only use the C500 online). I know this has a
performance hit, as when the cable modem is plugged straight into the C500,
it seems much faster.

Now, I think I should be connecting my 'modem' to a 'router' and then to
the 'hub' to make the internet accessible to all my macs. Is this correct?

Get a Wireless Router. I use a DLink DI-624, but there are many others, like the Linksys WRT54G. These go for around $60 - $70.

You connect your cable modem to the WAN connection, and it has a built-in 4 port switch that you plug your Macs into. Setup your Macs to use Automatic DHCP addressing, and then goto the IP address in your browser of the config page of the router (usually in the 192.168.0.x range), and make any adjustments you need to make, although you should be good to go with the defaults. The wireless part you just can turn off until you get a wireless laptop of some kind.

I don't recall how/if the built-in firewall of the router was configued when I got it, but you should definitely look at that.

With one of these you don't need your old hub - the switch will work much better. You can use your hub if you need to have all 5 computers connected at once.
