Subject: [SM] Hubs and Routers????
From: "i.bradley1" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hi all,

It's been a long time since I last posted, possibly a year+!, although I
do read all the posts.

This may seem really basic to everyone, but hears my problem.

I want to connect 2 macs, possibly all my macs (5), to the internet via
my ntl cable modem.

For the passed few years I've been connecting to the internet from my
C500 via a D-link 4 port hub.

My ntl cable modem is plugged into the hub for connection, this way I
can stay on my small mac network (I only use the C500 online). I know
this has a performance hit, as when the cable modem is plugged straight
into the C500, it seems much faster.

Now, I think I should be connecting my 'modem' to a 'router' and then
to the 'hub' to make the internet accessible to all my macs. Is this
correct?

***Yes, that is correct.

If this is correct, I know nothing about routers and could use some
advice on what to get and why.

***Find out what is available locally to you, that meets your needs. A
basic router (SMC, D-Link, Netgear, Linksys, etc.) should be available
for a lot less than USD$50.
Most routers are set-up using a web browser interface, and unless you
get a really poorly designed model, it probably comes with reasonably
good instructions for set-up (however, most are designed to be set up
most easily by running a program on a PC hooked to one of the ports) -
so do some background investigation, or even ask the dealer for a
demonstration on ease of setup.
Most basic routers also have a switch/hub built in (4-port is common),
so you may even be able to get rid of you current 4-port hub.
Any more questions regarding setup, just ask - many on this list should
be able to offer direction and/or advice.

best regards, Ian B (UK)
