I currently failed to downgrade.
Does that mean this mode should work in 7.1.x firmware? or things are
less likely to break?

yes - things might break with the 8.x software so you may have to
downgrade to the 7.1.x branch I'll try to see what is going on with that
mode, but it may take some time before I'll get a chance to do that.
