Of course, one should not click on suspicious links ... but this is no
the point. I took reasonable precautions before I did. The point is, how
can an email disappear without trace, while SM is running?

this was a long time ago, but I remember an email I
received. After it was opened, after a minute or two,
it deleted itself.
As I said, that was a long time ago, and I haven't seen
anything similar since.
