Ok, I will have to think about this for a moment. I presently have 2
ICONs on my desktop--one opens the web page window for 2.0.3 and the
other opens the web page for 1.1.18. That is what I want for the web
pages. Now, I am attempting to create 2 additional ICONs on the desktop
for opening mail in each version. The ICON for 2.0.3 (which for now
will not be my default browser) was established when 2.0.3 was
installed. When I click it, it keeps asking me if I want to make it my
default browser. When I say no, it reverts (I think) to 1.1.18.
No. This should not be happening. See more below.
Well, I have made a little progress at this point.
I now know that the mail ICON I have on my desktop belongs to 1.1.18.
It is located as follows:
C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\SeaMonkey\seamonkey.exe" -mail
As I stated my earlier message, C:Program Files\mozilla.org\Seamonkey
contains information pertaining to 1.1.8. I based this fact on going to
Windows Explorer>C:\Program Files\mozilla>selecting Properties>looked at
the Created date of Monday, Feb 04, 2008, 12:20. That tell me that the
ICON on my desktop (before this message) belongs to 1.1.18.
I next clicked the web page on my desktop for 2.0.3>clicked Help of the
Web page>clicked About SeaMonkey>and the window that opened displays
"SeaMonkey Version 2.0.3." I now know that I am in the new SeaMonkey
version. I next clicked Windows>Mail & Newsgroups>and I was taken to
the 2.0.3 mail page. Note; All of the items under Go on the mail page
where my newsgroups and inbox are listed are grayed out. Thus, I now
know that my last message on the newsgroup was prepared on 1.1.18 not
2.0.3 as I thought.
Now I need to learn how to make the items listed under Go on the 2.0.3
mail page turn black.
I say
this because--when I click Help and then About SeaMonkey (subsequent to
clicking NO to the default question) I see a window that opens to
1.1.18. I'm not sure what is going on at the moment. I think I am
sending this message using 2.0.3--but I'm not sure of that
fact--because, after clicking help, I again see 1.1.18.
When you go to Help -> About and see 1.1.18, then you are running
version 1.1.18.
See information above.
If you believe you're launching SM 2.0.3 and are getting 1.1.18, then
something is not set up correctly.
See information above.
This could be one of a couple problems that I can think of off-hand.
First, how do you have the shortcut set up on the desktop. Shortcuts
can point to an executable, or they can be "web" shortcuts, where
they just reference a web resource (like an HTML file) and allow
the system to determine the application to launch.
My Desktop ICONs point to executable files.
When you go to Properties on the shortcut, do you see the full path
to the seamonkey.exe executable in the Target field? If not, then
this may be your problem.
For 1.1.18 I see the following: "C:\Program
Files\mozilla.org\SeaMonkey\seamonkey.exe" -mail
Second problem is that when one version of SM is running, trying to
launch the other will just give you a new window to the currently-
running version. For example, say SM 1.1.X is currently running (even
if it's just the quick launch icon) and you launch the 2.X version
of SM, you will just get a new SM 1.1.X window.
I do understand. I will attempt to make the fix you suggested during
our earlier newsgroup conversation as soon as I get the two versions
working.
Before you can launch SM 2.X, you need to make sure you have no
instance of SM 1.1.X running at all. If you're not sure, check
the processes in the task manager - you should see no "seamonkey.exe"
process running.
I have not been doing this up to now. I have been looking at the bottom
of my screen where all of the software items running on my system are
identified in own tabs. I will start checking the task manager before
clicking a SeaMonkey ICON.
Note that there is a way to run both at the same time, but this
requires some additional effort, which I didn't mention as you
said you didn't want to run them both at the same time.
I will make this change as soon as I know that both systems are loaded
and working properly--one version at a time. As you can see, I will
need some very elementary lever instructions on how this is accomplished.
Note: I allowed to installation to install in the default locations.
I have the following under Documents and Settings:
C:\Documents and Settings\Frog\Application Data\Mozilla\
Extensions
Profiles
SeaMonkey
I believe the Extensions and Profiles Folders are connected with 1.1.18,
while SeaMonkey is associated with 2.0.3.
I don't know about where 2.X places it's profile info, so the above
may or may not be correct. I'll let someone else answer. However,
SM 1.1.X and SM 2.X will each use their own profile, so I don't
think it matters too much - so long as you didn't tweak either
version to use a custom location such that one may be using the
location used by the other.
I believe--repeat--I believe that they are separated completely from one
another--at least that is how it appears to this very low level
technician.
I have the following under Program Files:
C:\Program Files\Mozilla.org\SeaMonkey (followed by a number of sub folders.
I believe this is associated with 1.1.18
C:\Program Files\SeaMonkey (followed by a number of sub folders).
I believe this is associated with 2.0.3
That seems reasonable.
Now I must determine how to do what you suggest. I am not sure that I
can understand your recommendation--thus, I will likely be back with
further questions.
On your desktop, right-click and select New -> Shortcut
In the "Type the location of the item" entry field, enter the full path
to the "seamonkey.exe" executable. For the SM 1.1 icon, this will be
"C:\Program Files\Mozilla.org\SeaMonkey\seamonkey.exe"
For the SM 2.X icon, this will be:
"C:\Program Files\SeaMonkey\seamonkey.exe"
In the "Type a name for this shortcut" entry field, you can enter
"SM 1.1.18" for SM 1.1.X and "SM 2.0.3" for SM 2.X (or whatever you
like).
This should give you shortcuts to launch each version of the browser.
You can then add two additional shortcuts created just like the above,
except adding the "-mail" command line option, as in:
"C:\Program Files\SeaMonkey\seamonkey.exe -mail"
and name those icons something like "SM 2.X EMail".
Thanks to you, I now have working ICONs on my Desktop for both versions.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I now need to know how to fix the grayed out items under the mail
page>Go pertaining to my listing of mail and newsgroup entries. Any
suggestions?
