In the url address box: about:config
In Filter: news.update
Double-click news.update_unread_on_expand so that it is set to false.
You will of course have to click on 'Get Msgs' when you enter the
newsgroup, but this will stop SM from updating every newsgroup.
Believe me, I had the same issue as I am subscribed to about 100 mail
lists via the gmane.org nntp server & it was taking forever to start the
morning w/news.

In your start command preceed with: -no-remote
Example:
seamonkey -no-remote -mail -browser
