update... since this is a newer version of Seamonkey, I closed seamonkey, then went to the news folder under the profile, deleted the newsgroups msf file in the news folder and deleted the folder for the newsgroup.
While the newsgroup was retained, I had to go back in and re-subscribe to the sections I participated in and re-download, the thread finally stopped displaying when "Threads with Unread" was set.
