What I normally see when this occurs is a "(not responding)" message in
the windows title bar.
While it is highly irritating, I have found that when I switch to
another (non SM) window, a few minutes later SM starts responding.
I have also found that if I look at task manager after one of these
events, I frequently find multiple instances of seamonkey running... so,
I shut down the current instance of SM, then use task manager to kill
the old SM processes.
I am always reluctant to kill the current instance of SM based on having
had either profile or bookmark corruption from doing so.

Beverley, do you have to reply to postings without quoting any of the
previous posts??
I understand that at the moment, I can click on the message prior to
your's to see what you are talking about, but, at some time in the
future, the previous message will have expired from the server, and
people will be left wondering what the heck Beverley was talking about!!
There is no need to fully quote the message you are replying to (but you
can), you can cut the bits you're not responding to, if you wish!!
