It asked me what I want to open it with, I said SeaMonkey and it worked
just fine.

Yeah, but it shouldn't even prompt. It should just display it without
asking. It's a GIF image!

In my case 64 bit Win7 Ultimate with SM 2.0.10 and IrfanView installed,
the SM mail/news component opened the browser to the referenced url
and then put up a screen asking if I wanted the GIF opened
via IrfanView(default) or some other program, or be saved.
- When I selected IrfanView, it opened and displayed the GIF
- When I clicked on the x-close gadget of the IrfanView display
the system went wild!!
It began displaying pieces of what looked like log files or scripts
with some coloured text in the upper left corner of the screen,
I was finally able to stop this with an alt-F4 and a couple of ctrl-W.

Gave me a bit of a scare there.

That's pretty weird. I did the exact same thing here (W7 Pro 32-bit) and IrfanView worked fine.
