Yes. The real problem as far as I can tell is in 'Helper Applications'.
Unlike the other two comps it doesn't list .wmv, .avi etc. file types
individually but just has one general listing titled something like
'media files (.avi, .wmv. etc)'. Frankly I can't get it to display
anything using different media players including VLC and Windows Media
player unless the file is saved first. From there you can just double
click it and the proper media player for the given file type plays it
--but-- as far as I can tell its out of Seamonkey's hands at that point
and under control of Windows Explorer.
Perhaps direct edits to the 'prefs.js' file would fix the problem but
I'm not a Java programmer so I'm loathe to mess with it.
The offending comp happens to be my wife's laptop and she is a bit
disappointed with me for not fixing it, seeing as the other two comps
are mine and work just fine :={
By the way, a word of warning here. Do *NOT* get 'Playitall media
player'. It works fine for a while and then goes belly up. Its
uninstaller totally hosed Windows by changing file associations (.exe's
were changed to .lnk's !!!). I had to go command line and restore to
get
the comp to even function. This was on a different comp, by the way,
not
the one I am having a problem with. I still have a problem on the
Playitall comp in Windows Explorer where clicking on a folder in
Explorer's *right* view pane brings up an error message rather than
opening the folder.

In "Helper Applications" you should have several choices to play the
file type; one selection should be to "Play in SeaMonkey".
Open Helper Applications and click once on a file type and look for a
selection box. Click the selection box once to read a list of possible
choices, select the one to allow SeaMonkey to play that file.

You are missing the point. There are *no* individual selections listed
by video file type, just one general listing as I said above. I did try
setting SeaMonkey to play the video clips but that had the same result,
SeaMonkey just opens a new blank browser window and then does nothing.
Have you tried deleting the one general listing in SeaMonkey and then
opening the .wmv file?
I had a problem with .pptx files and ended up having to edit the
registry as well as editing mimeTypes.rdf in the prefs folder to fix
the problem. If you're reluctant to edit prefs.js I'm guessing that
you really don't want to edit the registry, so if deleting the one
video listing in SM doesn't fix the problem I'd try
- stopping SM
- renaming mimeTypes.rdf to something else
and try opening the attachment in SM again.

I am not afraid of editing the Windows' registry, I just don't think
that has anything to do with the problem as all common media files play
OK outside of SeaMonkey.
pptx files opened just fine for me outside of SM but I still had to
edit the registry to get SM to handle them properly. Check that
you've got the mime type configured in the registry:

Editing the registry is how I got rid of the
'PlayItAll' garbage. Since as I said above PlayItAll's uninstall file
totally hosed an XP computer (but not the comp in question here) to the
point that it was unusable. After doing a restore to an earlier date,
the only way to get rid of it was to remove all references to
'PlayItAll' it in the registry. As a side note, if anyone else has a
problems like this, while you are at it get rid of VLC in the same
manner. Its uninstall file doesn't uninstall shit, its behavior is
*very* virus like. VLC assigns itself to literally 1000's of file types
in the registry and the uninstaller leaves them in place to cause havoc.
For whatever it's worth, I've never had a problem with VLC. But the
only times I've uninstalled it was to install a newer version.
The hosed comp was a very recent new build so restoring before the two
apps were tried took it back to pretty much zero. After I got rid these
two apps COMODO firewall reports a whole lot less outgoing connections
(from 8 to 1). You be the judge, free apps or virus?
Getting off-topic, but you can configure VLC to not go looking for
updates, media info, etc.

I *am* afraid of editing the prefs.js file, but only because I don't
know *what needs fixed*. If you know I would be thankful for a clue.
You need the wmv mime type configured in the registry. I think once
you've got that SM will add the correct stuff to mimeTypes.rdf the
first time you try to d/l or open a wmv file. But if not, compare the
files on the working PC to the files on the non-working one. I like
WinMerge (http://winmerge.org/) but there's lots of free software that
will do the job.
I will however try your suggestion of deleting the generalized 'media
(.wmv, .avi, etc)' listing in SeaMonkey's Helper Application' section
and then try playing assorted media types attached to a SeaMonkey
received email and see what happens. That however will take a while as
my wife deletes email she can't read and its her laptop that has the
problem.
