F8 indeed gives me a new version of the missing toolbar -- who knew?
It reminds of the old days, when each program required knowledge of
mysterious commands to use its most basic functions.

I had also found the disappearing toolbar at the bottom of the page,
though I hadn't figured out to click the Acrobat logo to make magic
happen.

Still, the resulting print dialog box is a pretty big step down from
what I had before, which I assume was the print dialog from Adobe
Acrobat (not Adobe Reader).

Also, the plug-in has been crashing on me several times per day, so
SOMETHING still isn't right....

Until some recent change, I thought I had the best of both worlds.
When I needed full Acrobat functionality, I copied the PDF to the
desktop and opened it from there. The other 95% of the time, the
toolbar gave me sufficient control to easily copy, print, enlarge,
reduce, etc, all from within a SM browser window -- I assume it was a
plug-in from Adobe Acrobat, not from Adobe Reader?

I know I've lost this before after upgrading SM, and always found a
way to get it back -- but I sure can't remember how.

The magically appearing Reader toolbar is a pale imitation of the real
thing -- OK I guess if you're getting software for free, but an awful
substitute for the serious version.

Thanks for the tips, I'm back in business again and hopefully can
troubleshoot the crashing problem, or just give up on using the Reader
plug-in.
